Portland Trail Blazers guard Shaedon Sharpe is set to undergo abdominal surgery, the team announced Tuesday.
In a press release, the Trail Blazers revealed that the Canadian experienced worsening symptoms while increasing basketball activities amidst his return to play. As such, Sharpe will have corrective surgery on his core muscle injury.
The procedure is tentatively scheduled for later this week, but a timeline for his return will be determined once the surgery is complete.
The London, Ont.-native hasn't played since Portland's 139-77 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Jan. 11. Jabari Walker and Malcolm Brogdon could continue to receive additional minutes amidst Sharpe's absence.
This is particularly bad timing for Sharpe, who was named to the 2024 Panini Rising Stars game on Tuesday. As the game, which is the NBA’s annual showcase of premier young talent, takes place on Feb. 16, the 20-year-old will be unable to compete.
The seventh pick in the 2022 NBA draft, Sharpe was averaging 15.9 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 33.1 minutes per game this season before his injury. He has started 25 of 32 games.
