Canada’s Zach Edey probably envisioned his NBA debut lasting a little bit longer.
In the Memphis Grizzlies‘ regular-season opener against the Utah Jazz on Wednesday, the seven-foot-four rookie fouled out of the game in just 14 minutes of playing time.
Per Opta Stats, Edey became the first player since the NBA-ABA merger to start his NBA debut but foul out after playing 15 minutes or less.
The Toronto native dealt with foul trouble right from the opening tip, picking up two early in the first quarter. He would eventually foul out with 9:15 remaining in the fourth quarter.
With the fouls piling up, Edey struggled to get into the flow of the game and finished with just five points and five rebounds.
Edey fouled out just once in his four-year college career at Purdue, in the fifth game of his freshman season.
The Grizzlies’ first-round pick will get a chance to prove to his new team that he can stay on the floor when Memphis visits the Houston Rockets on Friday.
