Canadian coach Gordie Herbert, a longtime bench boss in international basketball, will have a shot to win a gold medal with Germany at the FIBA World Cup.
The head coach watched Germany upset the United States 113-111 in the second semifinal on Friday in Manila, Philippines.
Germany will face Serbia in the final on Sunday at 8:40 a.m. ET / 5:40 a.m. PT on Sportsnet and Sportsnet NOW.
“It’s a special group,” Herbert said after his team made the World Cup final for the first time. “The way we played, the way we played together, we stuck together when things got tough and we had players who made some huge plays. One more to go.”
A native of Penticton, B.C., Herbert was named German coach in September 2021.
Herbert guided Germany to bronze at the 2022 European championships.
As a player, Herbert was part of Canada’s 1984 Los Angeles Olympic team.
Herbert began his coaching career in Finland in 1994 and has also had stops in Austria, Germany, France, Greece, Russia and Georgia
Herbert was an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors in 2008-09.
