Mavericks’ Irving exits game vs. Trail Blazers with right foot injury

Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving will not return to Friday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers after suffering a right foot injury and will not return, the team announced.

The injury occurred in the second quarter after Irving went for a layup and fell to the ground after a foul. At the same time, teammate Dwight Powell went for the offensive rebound and ended up falling onto Irving’s leg.

He was slow to get up appearing to be in pain but shot his free throws before limping to the locker room.

Coach Jason Kidd said after the game that there is no further update on Irving’s status as of now but said that despite earlier reports that he had left the arena in a wheelchair, the guard was still in fact with the team at the Moda Center.

Kidd added that Irving would undergo further evaluation on Saturday.

Up to that point in the game, he had 11 points, two rebounds and two assists.

Irving has been playing well for the Mavericks in his first full season with the team after being traded to Dallas ahead of the deadline last year. He is averaging 23.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 5.4 assists.

The Mavericks came into Friday’s game with a 12-8 record and sit in fifth place in the Western Conference.
