The Toronto Raptors are making some roster alterations as they look to finalize their group for next season.
Toronto has waived forward Sasha Vezenkov and guard Javon Freeman-Liberty, the team announced on Monday.
The Raptors recently acquired Vezenkov in a trade with the Sacramento Kings that also netted them guard Davion Mitchell. The 28-year-old is a former Euroleague MVP but has not been able to get his footing in the NBA.
He averaged 5.4 and 2.3 rebounds in 12.2 minutes per game while hitting 37.5 per cent of his 3-point looks.
Team president Masai Ujiri said earlier this month that the team was working towards resolving a situation concerning the Bulgarian-born, Cyprus-raised Vezenkov. He reportedly wished to return to Europe and sign a multi-year contract to play with his former team Olympiacos, in Greece.
Vezenkov will not earn any money in the buyout, reportedly leaving $6.7 million on the table, according to Sportsnet’s Blake Murphy.
Freeman-Liberty, 24, signed a two-way contract with Toronto ahead of the 2023-24 season. The team converted his deal into a regular contract in March.
Last year, the Chicago native played 22 games and averaged 7.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 18 minutes per contest.
He was set to earn an additional $50,000 had the team kept him on the roster past July 22. Additionally, he could have earned another $800,000 had he been on the team on opening day.
