A former second-overall pick is getting a fresh start with a contending team.
The Indiana Pacers are signing centre James Wiseman to a two-year contract, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Tuesday.
Wiseman, 23, was selected second overall in the 2020 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors. He was a highly regarded prospect out of Memphis whose collegiate season was cut short due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
He averaged 7.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 0.6 blocks per game while shooting 61.3 per cent from the field with the Detroit Pistons in the 2023-24 season.
The Nashville, Tenn., native has averaged 9.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 0.7 blocks over his four-year NBA career.
He missed the 2021-22 season with a knee injury. He was included in a four-team trade that saw Golden State acquire Gary Payton II from the Portland Trail Blazers.
Wiseman now ends up with a Pacers team that lost backup centre/forward Jalen Smith in free agency and could give the former top prospect some runway off the bench.
