Raptors pick up contract options for Barnes, Achiuwa and Flynn

The Toronto Raptors have picked up the third-year contract option for guard Scottie Barnes and the fourth-year contract options for centre Precious Achiuwa and point guard Malachi Flynn.

The moves, announced Wednesday, lock all three players under contract through to the end of the 2023-24 season.

Barnes, 21, is entering his second year after a near-perfect rookie season that culminated with him winning the Rookie of the Year award. In 74 starts last season, Barnes averaged 15.3 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists while playing all over the floor.

Achiuwa, who turned 23 on Sept. 19, was the key piece the Raptors received in the Kyle Lowry trade with Miami. Last season, he averaged 9.1 points and 6.2 rebounds over 73 games, including 28 starts, and the Raptors are counting on him to be a key piece of their core moving forward.

Flynn, 24, was the Raptors’ first-round pick (29th overall) in 2020 and has appeared in 91 games over the past two seasons, including 19 starts. The six-foot-one point guard averaged 4.3 points and 1.6 assists in 44 games last season.

He is expected to be available when the Raptors open the season Wednesday against the Cavaliers despite suffering a cheekbone fracture during camp.
