Vince Carter’s No. 15 could be the first Toronto Raptors jersey hanging from the rafters at Scotiabank Arena.
The Raptors are reportedly planning to retire Carter’s jersey in a ceremony on Nov. 2 against the Sacramento Kings, ESPN reported on Monday. It would be the first jersey retirement in franchise history.
TSN was the first to report the news.
Carter spent the first six-and-a-half seasons of his career with the Raptors following a draft day trade with the Golden State Warriors in June 1998.
He instantly became the face of the franchise and won the Rookie of the Year Award in 1999.
Carter played in the All-Star Game six times as a Raptor and electrified as the NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion in 2000.
He holds a franchise-record average of 23.4 points per game.
After the Raptors traded him to the New Jersey Nets in 2004, Carter also played with the Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, Memphis Grizzlies, Kings and Atlanta Hawks. He became the first player to play 22 seasons in the league.
He retired in June 2020 with 25,728 career points, ranking him 21st in NBA history.
Carter is set to be enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in October.
The Brooklyn Nets also plan to retire Vince Carter’s jersey on Jan. 25, 2025, which would make him the first player to have two teams do it in the same season.
