Could this summer be the end of the Golden State Warriors as we know them?
According to The Athletic‘s Shams Charania, Golden State is preparing to lose longtime Warriors guard Klay Thompson in free agency.
Charania reported that the two sides have “had close to no communication since the negotiating period opened for incumbent free agents nearly two weeks ago and no offer has been made.”
Thompson is a four-time NBA champion, five-time All-Star and one of the most accomplished three-point shooters of all time. Charania said that the 34-year-old’s camp believes the Warriors’ interest in a reunion has been “disingenuous.”
Originally selected in 11th overall by Golden State in the 2011 NBA Draft, Thompson averaged 17.9 points over 43 per cent shooting from the field and 38 per cent from three in 2023-24. After suffering a torn ACL and torn Achilles in back-to-back years, Thompson has been working on returning to form since returning to the court in 2021-22.
With a championship resume and the ability to knock down shots from deep, Thompson is expected to draw interest from multiple suitors, a group that could include the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Clippers, per Charania.
