Wizards’ Malcolm Brogdon undergoes thumb surgery

The Washington Wizards will be missing one of their leaders as they prepare for the season.

Point guard Malcolm Brogdon underwent surgery to repair a ligament tear in his right thumb, the team announced Tuesday.

Josh Robbins of The Athletic reported that athletes with similar injuries generally need six to eight weeks to recover, meaning Brogdon wouldn’t be available for the start of the season.

Brogdon was hurt during a practice Saturday in Montreal ahead of the team’s pre-season opener against the Toronto Raptors at Bell Centre.

The rebuilding Wizards acquired Brogdon in a trade with the Portland Trail Blazers this summer.

Brogdon, 31, was NBA rookie of the year in 2016-17 with the Milwaukee Bucks and sixth man of the year in 2022-23 with the Boston Celtics.

Brogdon has averaged 15.4 points during his eight-year NBA career.
