Florida Atlantic University has a polarizing candidate in mind for the next head coach of its football program.
According to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter on Wednesday, Pro football Hall-of-Fame linebacker Ray Lewis has emerged as a potential coaching option for FAU.
However, The Palm Beach Post's Nick Pugliese and Tom D'Angelo contradicted Schefter's report with a report of their own that said Lewis is in fact not a candidate for the job.
FAU is 0-6 this season in the AAC and has not had a winning season since the shortened 2020 season when they finished 5-4. The Owls fired former head coach Tom Herman Monday after going 6-16 in his tenure.
Going after football Hall of Famers seems to be the new trend in college football after Deion Sanders' success at the University of Colorado. 'Prime Time' has the Buffs sitting at 8-2 and firmly in the playoff hunt in just his second year in Boulder, after the program had not had a winning season since 2016.
For smaller programs that aren't in Power 4 conferences like FAU, a highly respected and decorated player like Lewis as the head coach would seemingly help with recruitment, both from high school and in the transfer portal.
