San Francisco 49ers rookie kicker Jake Moody set a Super Bowl record with a 55-yard field goal to open the scoring on Sunday early in the second quarter against the Kansas City Chiefs, but he spent no more than two hours in the record book.
Chiefs veteran kicker Harrison Butker connected from 57 yards early in the third quarter to cut the 49ers' lead to 10-6.
For Butker, it was his ninth consecutive make from 50 yards or more.
Moody's kick was one yard longer than Canadian Steve Christie's successful attempt from 54 yards for the Buffalo Bills in a loss against the Dallas Cowboys in the Super Bowl at the conclusion of the 1993 season.
Moody was a third-round pick (99th overall) out of Michigan in the 2023 NFL Draft.
He made 21 of 25 field goals during the regular season, with his longest from 57 yards.
Butker was a seventh-round Chiefs pick (233rd overall) out of Georgia in 2017. He made 33 of 35 field goals this year, with his longest from 60.
Christie, from Oakville, Ont., played for the Bills from 1992-2000. He played one game with the Toronto Argonauts in 2007 to finish his playing career.
