The San Francisco 49ers have added some depth to their defensive backfield with the signing of veteran Logan Ryan, as announced by the team on Tuesday.
Ryan, 32, has yet to suit up for a team this season. The last time he was on an NFL field was in 2022 when he played in nine games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, starting six of them.
Most remember Ryan for his early years with the New England Patriots where he helped the team capture two Super Bowl titles, over the Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons.
San Fransisco at 9-3 and leading the NFC West likely didn't bring him in to be an immediate impact player to an already stout defence. The 49ers are currently tied for the sixth-most sacks in the NFL (36) and have allowed just 12 touchdowns (tied for second-least).
Instead, they'll lean on Ryan's veteran experience and versatility.
Through 10 years in the league, Ryan has racked up 19 interceptions and 15 interceptions and has done it playing multiple different positions. He was a cornerback who played both sides for his years with the Patriots and Tennessee Titans, before shifting to safety with the New York Giants and Buccaneers.
Ryan will begin his latest attempt at a third Super Bowl ring, with the 49ers, on Sunday when they take on division rival, the Seahawks.
