Buffalo Bills receiver Isaiah McKenzie shared on social media that he had begun the COVID-19 vaccination process “for the greater good.”
McKenzie was fined $14,650 earlier this week by the NFL for twice failing to wear a mask in designated areas as a non-vaccinated person. He made headlines by sharing the letter the NFL sent to him, writing “$14,650 damn. Pray for me” along with a laughing face emoji on his Twitter account.
McKenzie was one of a number of players on the Bills who have not been vaccinated, a fact which head coach Sean McDermott called “frustrating.” McDermott’s comments came after four players — including outspoken vaccine critic Cole Beasley — were placed in COVID-19 protocols on Tuesday, which includes a minimum five-day quarantine away from team facilities.
“There’s people’s livelihoods at stake in terms of people’s jobs,” McDermott said. “Being able to count on people is important, so when you’re going through a week — if this were a real week — and having the players out that we’ve had, that makes it harder to win games that way.”
The NFL announced Thursday that 93 per cent of the player pool has been vaccinated against COVID-19.
