The Miami Dolphins and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio have mutually agreed to part ways after one season together, the NFL team announced Wednesday.
Fangio, 65, replaced Josh Boyer as Miami's defensive coordinator last offseason and led the Dolphins' defence to a No. 10 finish in 2023, allowing 318.3 yards per game. It was the first time Miami finished a season with a top-10 defence since 2010.
The Dolphins lost three of their final five games, allowing the Buffalo Bills to overtake them for the AFC East title, before falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in the opening round of the playoffs.
"When we assessed this season, it became apparent that this was the best path forward for all parties involved," head coach Mike McDaniel said in a statement. "Now, we turn our focus to 2024 and beyond with urgency as we identify the best candidate to lead our defence moving forward."
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Fangio will be the Philadelphia Eagles' top target as defensive coordinator. Fangio served as a consultant for the Eagles in 2022.
Fangio was head coach of the Denver Broncos from 2019-21.
He also has served as defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears.
