Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel told media Friday that rookie Skylar Thompson will be the team's starting quarterback for their Wild Card matchup on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.
The official announcement comes after the Dolphins' first-string quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was ruled out for the playoff game on Wednesday, as he still remains in the NFL's concussion protocol.
Teddy Bridgewater has also been dealing with injury, with the backup in the process of working his way back from a dislocated pinky finger. McDaniel feels optimistic Bridgewater should be available to back up Thompson on Sunday.
With Thompson in his first year in the NFL, Sunday will mark the third-stringer's playoff debut.
The 25-year-old started in the Dolphins' regular season-finale against the New York Jets, completing 20-of-31 passes for 152 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. The Dolphins won 11-6.
