Sonic and Knuckles are back together.
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell said Tuesday that he expects running back David Montgomery to return for the Divisional Round next week.
The Lions feature one of the best running back duos in the league, with Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs known as "Sonic and Knuckles" due to the latter's blazing speed and the former's powerful and bruising game.
Montgomery and Gibbs combined to rush for over 2,100 yards and 28 touchdowns this season. Montgomery accounted for 775 yards and 12 scores.
Montgomery injured his knee in Week 15 against Buffalo. It was originally reported that the 27-year-old had suffered a torn MCL and would require season-ending surgery. Montgomery sought out three opinions and eventually opted for rehab to give him a chance to play in the playoffs.
Detroit won its last three games en route to the top seed in the NFC, earning the coveted bye week. Gibbs totalled over 100 yards and a touchdown on the ground in each of the wins, punctuated by a four-TD performance Sunday to clinch the conference.
