The Minnesota Vikings have signed star tight end T.J. Hockenson to a contract extension, the team announced Thursday.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the deal is a four-year, $68.5 million contract that resets the tight end market. Hockenson's $17.125 million per season and $42.5 million guaranteed are the highest for a tight end in NFL history.
Darren Waller's $17 million per season with the New York Giants was the previous benchmark for the position.
Hockenson, 26, was acquired by the Vikings in a trade with the Detroit Lions last season.
During training camp, Hockenson has been a "hold in," but will now be a full participant in practice as the Vikings prepare for Week 1, when they host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In 10 games with the Vikings, Hockenson caught 60 passes for 519 yards and three touchdowns. He was named to the 2023 Pro Bowl roster, the second time he has made the team in his four-year career.
With the Lions, Hockenson was targeted 287 times for 186 receptions, recording 2,068 yards and 15 touchdowns.
With Hockenson locked up, the Vikings will now turn their attention to another one of quarterback Kirk Cousins's weapons: wide receiver Justin Jefferson. Many believe Jefferson will become the highest-paid receiver in the league when he signs his next contact.
