Washington Commanders rookie running back Brian Robinson was shot multiple times in a carjacking attempt, a police spokesperson confirmed to The Washington Post.
The spokesman, Dustin Sternbeck, told The Post that Robinson is in stable condition.
D.C. police announced on Twitter shortly after 6 p.m. ET that it was investigating a shooting at the 1,000 block of H Street NE. The police department said it was looking "for two black juvenile males with shoulder length dreads, medium complexion, wearing a black or brown shirt with yellow smiley faces on it."
Sternbeck confirmed to The Post that the tweet was referencing the shooting of Robinson.
In a statement, the Washington Commanders confirmed they knew of the situation.
"We have been made aware that Brian Robinson, Jr. was the victim of an attempted armed robbery or carjacking in Washington, D.C. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is currently being treated at the hospital, where Team officials are on-site with him. We ask that you please respect Brian's privacy at this time," the statement read.
Head coach Ron Rivera also provided a personal statement regarding Robinson's condition.
"He is in good spirits and wanted me to thank everyone for their kind words, prayers & support," Rivera wrote on Twitter. "He wants his teammates to know he appreciates them all for reaching out and he loves them all & will be back soon doing what he does best."
Robinson, 23, was selected by the Commanders in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft and was recently announced as the team's starting running back for the upcoming season.
