The San Francisco 49ers have reportedly reached an agreement with former Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold on a one-year deal, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The terms of the contract other than the length have not yet been reported.
Darnold, a former third-overall pick by the New York Jets in 2018, joins his third team in four years after being traded to the Panthers in 2021.
Last season, his second year in Carolina, he threw for 1143 yards in six starts, tacking on seven touchdowns and three interceptions. He was steeped in a QB battle with Baker Mayfield, the former No. 1 overall pick in 2018, though neither found much success.
The former USC product managed four wins and two losses last year and has a 21-34 all-time record.
The 49ers meanwhile bring in Darnold to add to their QB depth behind Trey Lance and Brock Purdy. They reportedly lost former QB Jimmy Garoppolo to the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency.
San Francisco won the NFC West last season, finishing with a record of 13-4 in the regular season but lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship.
They struggled with injuries to their QBs in that loss, with backup Brock Purdy hurting his throwing arm and fourth-stringer Josh Johnson suffering a concussion.
