San Francisco 49ers star receiver Deebo Samuel has been hospitalized with pneumonia and fluid in his lungs, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Monday.
Samuel suited up for Sunday's loss against the Kansas City Chiefs but only played three snaps before exiting the game due to illness.
Shanahan did not have a timetable for Samuel's return.
"He's in the hospital still and we'll see how he recovers here over these next couple days,” Shanahan said.
“He went in last night," Shanahan added. "I think it started acting up in the middle of the night Saturday night or early Sunday morning and then it just kind of evolved as the day went. So once we found out he had the fluid in his lungs and stuff after the game, then I believe they sent him over there. I'm not sure the timeline of it, but I just found out that's where he was Sunday night when I was at home.”
Star tight end George Kittle is considered day-to-day with a foot sprain, Shanahan said.
The bad news just keeps piling up for the 3-4 49ers, who also lost receiver Brandon Aiyuk for the season after an MRI on Monday revealed he tore both his ACL and MCL against the Chiefs.
San Francisco matches up with the Dallas Cowboys in Week 8.
Shanahan said he'd be "surprised" if Christian McCaffrey could play against the Cowboys, but could potentially return for Week 10 after the team's bye week. The star tailback has missed all seven of the 49ers' games with Achilles tendinitis.
"Christian's still progressing through his rehab," Shanahan said. "He hasn't had any setbacks, so it's been all good news so far."
