The Chicago Bears appear to be going with a veteran and a rookie as their lead assistants.
Former New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen is set to become the Bears' new defensive coordinator, while former Denver Broncos tight ends coach Declan Doyle will be the team's offensive coordinator, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Sunday.
Allen served as the Saints' head coach from 2022 to 2024 after spending six years as the team's defensive coordinator. He was fired by the team following a Week 9 loss to the Carolina Panthers.
The 52-year-old has worked on coaching staffs around the NFL for 23 years, beginning as a defensive quality control coordinator with the Atlanta Falcons in 2002.
On the other side of the ball, Doyle is set to become the youngest offensive coordinator in the NFL at only 28.
Doyle has been with the Broncos since 2023 when he came to the team alongside Sean Payton. Prior to his time in Denver, Doyle worked as an offensive assistant coach with the New Orleans Saints from 2019-2022.
The Bears hired Ben Johnson as head coach earlier this week. The 38-year-old was formerly the offensive coordinator for the NFC North division rival Detroit Lions.
