The Los Angeles Chargers are adding a veteran running back for the playoff run.
The Chargers signed former Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott to their practice squad on Monday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported.
Elliott was recently released by the Cowboys and will join the Chargers ahead of their wild-card matchup with the Houston Texans on Saturday.
The 29-year-old appeared in 15 games for Dallas this season, and finished with 226 yards and three touchdowns on 74 carries.
Elliott, who was drafted by the Cowboys in 2016, is far from what he once was in his early years in Dallas, where he made three Pro Bowls in his first four seasons. But the Chargers are sorely lacking RB depth, with Gus Edwards still on injured reserve.
J.K. Dobbins will handle the bulk of the RB duties for the Chargers, but Elliott could provide a veteran presence in the backfield and help with some goal-line work if he can up to speed in time.
The 2016 All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler finished his Dallas career with 1,955 carries for 8,488 yards and 71 touchdowns, third on the club in all three categories behind Pro Football Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith, the NFL's all-time rushing leader, and Tony Dorsett. Elliott has 9,130 yards and 74 touchdowns overall.
