The New York Jets plan to release quarterback Chris Streveler after the former Winnipeg Blue Bomber led the team to a 3-0 record in pre-season play, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
Streveler, who is fourth on the Jets' QB depth chart and was a late signing, made headlines and earned praise in the New York locker room this summer.
After Sunday's win over the New York Giants, coach Robert Saleh shouted "Streveler" to end his speech in the locker room. Teammates then chanted Streveler's name and he then proceeded to make his own speech.
Saleh told reporters Streveler had "one of the greatest pre-seasons in the history of football."
After his last-minute touchdown pass Sunday, CBS play-by-play man Ian Eagle exclaimed "Streveler owns August."
Zach Wilson, Joe Flacco and Mike White are ahead of Streveler on the depth chart.
Streveler, 27, could be added to the Jets practice roster if he clears waivers.
Streveler won a Grey Cup with the Blue Bombers in 2019 before signing with the Arizona Cardinals, where he made one start in 2020. He also has spent time on the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins rosters.
Streveler likely would have no shortage of suitors in the CFL if he decided to come back as the Canadian league's quarterbacking landscape has shifted dramatically in recent weeks.
NFL teams must get down to 53-man rosters on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.
