The NFL is set to implement optical tracking for line-to-gain rulings on a trial basis in the pre-season, Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported on Wednesday.
According to Jones, if this trial run goes well the new system will be implemented for the full 2024 season.
The chains formerly used to track line-to-gain will remain on the sidelines to be used as backup and as a reference point for those in the stadium. The main purpose of implementing optical tracking will be to reduce the likelihood of human error and produce more accurate results.
Optical tracking systems have been used sporadically in a few stadiums across the NFL, including in MetLife and Hard Rock, but this would be the first time it is used on a full-scale basis.
Jones also reported that this initiative can be tabled until 2025 should the league notice any problems.
