Black Monday is less than 24 hours away, and a few NFL coaches could be looking for a new job after the NFL regular season concludes on Sunday.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, one of those coaches that may need to update his resume is New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo.
On ESPN's NFL Countdown on Sunday, Schefter started his annual "Safe or Out" segment with Mayo. He said that over the last 30 days, there has been a shift inside the Patriots organization, with the team now favouring moving on from Mayo at the conclusion of this season.
“Now, all along the Kraft family has wanted to stand by him and give him support,” Schefter said. ”He was the hand-chosen successor to Bill Belichick. But over the last 30 days or so, the team has struggled, they’ve lost at home, fans have been angered, they’ve been apathetic and it feels like within the organization, there’s been a shift. There’s nervous people inside the building right now and we are going to go leaning out right now for Jerod Mayo.”
In Mayo's first season as the Patriots head coach, the team entered the final week of the season a disappointing 3-13 and can secure the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft with a loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
Mayo took over this season for the legendary Bill Belichick after the Patriots and Belichick decided to part ways after 24 seasons. Mayo played linebacker for Belichick and the Patriots from 2008-15 and won one Super Bowl.
Mayo isn't the only head coach that Schefter believes could be on the chopping block.
Doug Pederson of the Jacksonville Jaguars is the other head coach that Schefter believes will be let go.
On the flip side, here are the coaches Schefter says he believes will keep their jobs:
Antonio Pierce - Las Vegas Raiders
Brian Callahan - Tennessee Titans
Shane Steichen - Indianpolis Colts
Brian Daboll - New York Giants
Kevin Stefanski - Cleveland Browns
Mike McCarthy - Dallas Cowboys
Schefter did also note that many of these situations are fluid, and things could change depending on Sunday's results.
