The Pittsburgh Steelers are close to finalizing an extension for backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky, general manager Omar Khan said on Thursday.
"We're finishing up an extension with Mitch Trubisky and that will be done here shortly," Khan said on The Pat McAfee show.
The deal is said to be a two-year extension that will reduce the QB’s cap number for the 2023 season (previously $10 million), according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Trubisky had signed with the Steelers on a two-year contract in 2022. He was initially named the starting quarterback of the franchise and played the first four games of the season before being benched for first-round draft pick Kenny Pickett.
The 28-year-old threw four touchdown passes against five interceptions in seven appearances (five starts) last season.
Before his stint with the Steelers, Trubisky played for the Buffalo Bills and the Chicago Bears. He had some initial success with the Bears, who drafted him second overall in the 2017 NFL draft, leading them to the NFC North Division title in his second season and being selected to the Pro Bowl.
However, Trubisky left the team in 2021 via free agency to join the Buffalo Bills and become the backup quarterback to Josh Allen.
Pittsburgh also signed longtime backup quarterback Mason Rudolph to a one-year deal a day earlier.
The Steelers selected Rudolph in the third round of the 2018 draft and he went 5-4-1 while making intermittent starts between the 2019 and 2021 seasons, throwing for 2,366 yards with 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
