Las Vegas Raiders starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Thursday.
The Raiders will not have to decide if veteran backup Brian Hoyer or rookie Aidan O'Connell will start in place of the injured Garoppolo.
Garoppolo hurt his back in the Raiders' Week 6 win over the New England Patriots. Tests have revealed that the injury is not as serious as the team originally feared, but the Raiders are still being cautious.
The oft-injured quarterback has already missed one start this season. In five games with the Raiders, Garoppolo has thrown for 1,079 yards and seven touchdowns while completing 68 per cent of his passes. He has also been intercepted a league-high eight times.
With Garoppolo ruled out, Sunday's game against the Bears will now be a battle of backup QBs, as Bears starter Justin Fields has also been ruled out with a dislocated thumb he suffered in Week 6.
The Raiders sit second in the AFC West with a 3-3 record.
