The agent for Los Angeles Rams star Aaron Donald submitted a retirement letter to the team in May before the defensive end changed course and renegotiated his contract with the reigning Super Bowl champs, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.
The story was published just hours before the Rams were set to host the Buffalo Bills in the 2022 season opener on Thursday.
Rapoport writes that the letter was sent to the Rams on May 9, but it was never submitted to the NFL.
The letter was sent with the understanding that agent Todd France would discuss the situation with the Rams the next day.
It led to further conversations with the two sides eventually agreeing to a raise for the final three years of Donald's original six-year, $136-million extension
The Rams gave Donald a $40-million raise for the final three years, making his average annual salary $31.6 million.
Donald is a three-time NFL defensive player of the year and an eight-time Pro Bowler.
