Sources around the NFL are saying that a divorce may be on the horizon between the Green Bay Packers and long-time franchise quarterback Aaron Rodgers, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Schefter cited financial reasons (Rodgers is slated to make nearly $60 million next season and the Packers are already $16 million over the cap), the lack of talent on the roster, and a slightly soured relationship between the franchise and its cornerstone.
The Packers missed the playoffs this season after losing a win-and-get-in game to the Detroit Lions — after the game, Rodgers refused to swap his jersey with the Lions' Jameson Williams, saying that he wanted to "hold onto this one."
Rumours about potential trading partners have been circulating, and the New York Jets and Las Vegas Raiders are early picks to land the superstar. Both teams have assets, competitive rosters, are looking for an upgrade at quarterback, and have personnel with links to Rodgers (WR Davante Adams in Vegas, and new OC Nathaniel Hackett in New York).
Rodgers has spent his entire Hall of Fame career in Green Bay, taking over from Brett Favre in 2007 and winning a Superbowl and three MVP awards since.
Backup Jordan Love, whose selection in the first round of the 2020 draft by the Packers was a major source of discontent for Rodgers, figures to slot in as the starter in the event that Rodgers departs.
