Daniel Jones is getting a new beginning in the NFL, this time with a contender.
The Minnesota Vikings have signed the quarterback after he was waived by the New York Giants last week, Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz reported Wednesday.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that he will join the team's practice squad and eventually become the backup to starter Sam Darnold.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, he will sign a one-year deal with the Vikings for the remainder of this season worth $375,000. Because he's signing with the practice squad for the time being, Jones will be allowed to sign with another team if a starting spot opens up elsewhere.
Jones, 27, was released by the Giants on Friday after it was announced that he was being benched in favour of Tommy DeVito going into the team's Sunday game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The sixth-year QB has struggled this season, completing just 63 per cent of his passes while throwing for 2,070 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. He led the Giants to a 2-8 record.
He signed a four-year, $160 million contract following the 2022 season that saw him lead the Giants to their first playoff berth in five years with a 9-7-1 record. However, they missed the playoffs last year after Jones suffered a torn ACL in Week 9.
Jones went 24-44-1 as a starter in New York.
Darnold has helped the Vikings start 9-2. Jones joins Nick Mullens and Brett Rypien in Minnesota’s quarterback room. Rookie first-round pick J.J. McCarthy had season-ending knee surgery in August and a second procedure on his knee earlier this month.
The Vikings will play host to the Arizona Cardinals (6-5) on Sunday.
