Saints to start rookie QB Spencer Rattler vs. Buccaneers

Another rookie QB is set to make his debut in Week 6 of the NFL season.

New Orleans Saints signal-caller Spencer Rattler will be making his first career start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday with Derek Carr out due to an oblique injury, head coach Dennis Allen announced Wednesday.

He's expected to miss multiple weeks with the injury.

Rattler, 24, appeared for New Orleans in the pre-season, completing 20 of his 38 pass attempts for 202 yards and a touchdown in three games.

“We just internally talked a lot about it and felt like in this particular game he was going to give us the best chance to win,” Allen said of Rattler. “He’s a rookie so we’re going to have some challenges that go along with that but I think we’ll have a good plan for him.”

The Phoenix, Arz., native was selected by the Saints in the fifth round (150th overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft out of South Carolina. He threw for 3186 yards with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions in his senior season with the Gamecocks.

Rattler is a former five-star recruit who began his collegiate career at Oklahoma. He left the Sooners, transferring to South Carolina, after being replaced as the starter by current Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams.

The Saints are currently 2-3 and sit third in the NFC South. They've lost three-straight after a Monday night defeat at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs.
