The Washington Football Team will be without quarterback Kyle Allen for the remainder of the season as he requires surgery to repair a dislocated ankle.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the surgery will happen and Allen confirmed the news as well in an emotional Instagram post.
Just want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support today,” Allen wrote. “This is the unfortunate part of the game we play, but there’s no adversity you can’t overcome!! I promise I’ll be back stronger, and better because of it. Loved every second of my first year in Washington, I can’t wait for more!”

Allen was injured in the first quarter of Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants. While running to avoid pressure, Allen was tackled by the Giants’ Jabrill Peppers. It was immediately clear the injury was severe and Allen had to be taken off the field on a cart with an air cast on his left leg.
Peppers was flagged for unnecessary roughness on the play.
The 24-year-old Allen made four starts at quarterback for Washington this season, his first with the team. He threw an average of 152.5 yards per game with four touchdowns and one interception.
With Allen injured, head coach Ron Rivera confirmed Alex Smith will start in Week 10 against the Detroit Lions. Smith himself returned to the field early this season after suffering a serious leg injury in November of 2018. Sunday’s relief appearance by Smith against the Giants was just his second game since recovering.
“Obviously, a ton of emotions going on for me right there,” Smith said of Allen’s injury post-game. “I see them with the air cast and the cart. I know that routine well.”
