Reports: Chiefs to make Harrison Butker league’s highest-paid kicker

The Kansas City Chiefs and Harrison Butker have agreed to a contract extension that will make him the league’s highest-paid kicker, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported Monday.

The deal is four years and worth $25.6 million, including $17.75 million guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

He is entering the final season of a five-year contract he signed in 2019.

Butker has won three Super Bowl titles with the Chiefs. The 29-year-old kicked the tying field goal that forced overtime en route to Kansas City’s Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers in February.

The former seventh-round pick (No. 233) in 2017 has converted 89.1 per cent of his field goals (197 for 221) in seven seasons with the Chiefs. He’s made 70 per cent (28 for 40) from beyond 50 yards. In the playoffs, Butker has made 32 of 36 field goals (88.9 per cent) and 62 of 65 extra points (95.4 per cent).

Butker sparked controversy in May when he spoke against Pride month, working women, President Joe Biden’s leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and abortion during a commencement address at Benedictine College.

The NFL distanced itself from Butker’s remarks, saying the comments and “views are not those of the NFL as an organization.”

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said Butker is entitled to his beliefs, even though he doesn’t always agree with him.
