2021 NHL Draft first-round order finalized with conclusion of Cup Final

With the Stanley Cup awarded, the order for the first round of the 2021 NHL Draft has been finalized.

The Montreal Canadiens, after losing in five games in the Final, will have pick No. 30.

The 31st selection in the draft was awarded to the Tampa Bay Lightning, winners of the Cup. However, in a deal to acquire defenceman David Savard in April, the Lightning traded their first-round pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets, who will now have the rights to the selection.

Picks one through 15 were determined at the NHL Draft Lottery, which took place in June.

The Buffalo Sabres won the lottery, giving them the No. 1 overall pick, and the Seattle Kraken, whose inaugural season will begin next year, won the second pick.

Picks three to 15 were assigned in reverse order of points in the regular-season standings.

The 12 clubs that lost in round one or two of the playoffs hold picks 16-27. Teams that didn’t win their division were placed in inverse order of regular-season points, followed by the four division winners, again in inverse order.

The New York Islanders and Vegas Golden Knights, who lost in the semifinals, hold picks 28 and 29, in inverse order of where they finished in the regular season.
