26 NHL players file for salary arbitration ahead of deadline

A total of 26 players filed for salary arbitration ahead of Saturday’s player deadline, the NHLPA announced.

The deadline for teams to elect for arbitration is Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. ET. All hearings will be held from Oct. 20 to Nov. 8.

Among the list of players were four members of the Ottawa Senators — Connor Brown, Christian Jaros, Nick Paul and Chris Tierney.

In 71 appearances with the Senators, Brown, who was signed to a contract paying him $2.1 million per season, scored 16 goals and added 27 assists. Jaros, at 24 years old, is the youngest Senators player in the group and has appeared in 76 games throughout his career, scoring once and adding 12 assists. Paul notched career-highs in games played (56), goals (nine) and assists (11) last season. Tierney scored 11 goals and added 26 assists last season, his second in Ottawa.

Jake Virtanen of the Vancouver Canucks opted for arbitration, too, after a season in which he scored 18 goals and added 18 assists in 69 regular season games.

Staying on the west coast, Andrew Mangiapane and the Calgary Flames will be going to arbitration as well. Mangiapane notched career-highs in goals (17), assists (15) and games played last year.

Earlier in the day, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ilya Mikheyev had filed for salary arbitration, which has since been confirmed by the NHLPA’s official list.

Other notable names around the league included New York Rangers defenceman Tony DeAngelo and forward Ryan Strome, as well as goaltender Alexandar Georgiev.

Georgiev went 17-14-2 with a 3.04 goals-against average, a .910 save percentage and two shutouts in 34 games last season.

DeAngelo, 24, received a qualifying offer valued at $971,250, according to calculations made by CapFriendly, after a season in which he finished tied for fourth among NHL defencemen with 53 points (and tied for third with 15 goals). Strome, 27, received a qualifying offer that matched his past year’s salary of $3.2 million. He was second on the Rangers in assists (41) and third in points (59) during the 2019-20 season.
