Jessica Campbell, an assistant coach with the AHL's Coachella Valley Firebirds, will be behind the bench when the Seattle Kraken face the Calgary Flames in split-squad action Monday.
Campbell will be the second woman to serve as a coach during an NHL game this fall, joining Kori Cheverie. The PWHL Montreal team's head coach was on the bench with the Pittsburgh Penguins over the weekend.
Trainers Aisha Visram and Jodi van Rees are the only other women known to have worked on an NHL bench during a game.
Campbell, a native of Rocanville, Sask., represented Canada as a player at two u-18 world championships and the 2015 IIHF Women's World Hockey Championship. She played her college hockey at Cornell from 2010-14, serving as captain in her senior season, and also skated for three seasons with the Calgary Inferno of the former CWHL.
Campbell was the first assistant coach hired by head coach Dan Bylsma ahead of the Firebirds' inaugural season in 2022-23. Her coaching resume includes being the first woman to coach at the men's IIHF World Hockey Championship when she was an assistant coach with Germany at the 2022 event.
