If Sheldon Keefe keeps his job as head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, he'll likely get an extension, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports.
Keefe has one year left on his deal and Friedman says he's met twice with the Leafs since Brad Treliving was hired as general manager last week.
"If he's back, I think we're in a situation where they won't go in with him in his last year. I think there will be an extension if he returns as coach of the Maple Leafs," Friedman said.
Keefe was hired by previous general manager Kyle Dubas, who was fired last month.
The Leafs won their first playoff series in four years under Keefe in the opening round this year when they beat the Tampa Bay Lightning but then lost in five games against the Florida Panthers in the second round.
Speaking of Dubas, Friedman says he has received a lengthy contract from the Penguins, who hired him as president of hockey operations last week.
"From what I understand, it's big term. I think it's seven years for Dubas to be the president of hockey operations and interim GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins," Friedman said.
Friedman says the Jets will be listening to offers for forwards Pierre-Luc Dubois and Mark Scheifele and goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, but added that Winnipeg is not willing to throw in the towel on contending.
All three players have one year left on their contracts.
"What I think the Jets have made very clear is this is not going to be a rebuild, they are not tearing it down and they are not starting over again," Friedman said. "Obviously, there could be some futures as part of these trades if it happens but they've got a lot of good players on term contracts and they want to support them."
The Devils could be open to trading the rights to pending unrestricted free agent Damon Severson before July 1 if they can't sign him to an extension, Friedman says.
The Devils kept Severson at the deadline to try to boost their playoff chances.
Severson, 28, had seven goals and 26 assists for 33 points in 81 games this season.
