The Buffalo Sabres signed top defenceman Rasmus Dahlin to a new eight-year, $88-million contract extension that begins next season.
Additionally, GM Kevyn Adams told reporters that forward Zach Benson will break camp with the NHL club.
Benson, 18, was selected 13th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft. A native of Chilliwack, B.C., Benson had 98 points in 60 games for the then-Winnipeg Ice of the WHL last season.
Benson can play nine NHL games before his entry-level contract kicks in.
The Flames announced their final three cuts before the roster deadline.
Right winger Adam Klapka, centre Cole Schwindt and defenceman Ilya Solovyov have been assigned to the AHL's Calgary Wranglers.
Schwindt, the third player included in the Matthew Tkachuk trade, made noise as a depth pivot for the Flames and could get a look at the NHL level this season.
The team also announced that defenceman Oliver Kylington will start the season on the injured list.
The Maple Leafs had a busy day as they finalized their roster.
The day began with news that goaltender Matt Murray — who had already been ruled out for the season — had undergone bilateral hip surgery that will require at least 6-8 months to recover from.
The Maple Leafs also assigned the following players to the AHL's Marlies:
F Nick Abruzzese
F Max Ellis
G Dennis Hildeby
F Roni Hirvonen
F Pontus Holmberg
D Topi Niemelä
D Marshall Rifai
F Nicholas Robertson
F Logan Shaw
F Ryan Tverberg
Those cuts meant 19-year-old rookie Fraser Minten has made the opening-night roster, which he confirmed to reporters.
Finally, the Maple Leafs made some off-ice appointments on Monday. Curtis McElhinney has been hired as the Director of Goaltending Development and Scouting, Jake Muzzin has been named a Pro Scout and Chris Bourque will assume a new role as a College Free Agent Scout.
The Winnipeg Jets signed Connor Hellebuyck and centre Mark Scheifele to seven-year contract extensions worth $59.5 million with a cap hit of $8.5 million.
Hellebuyck, 30, is coming off a stellar 37-win season in which he had a 2.49 goals-against average, a .920 save percentage and four shutouts, earning him another Vezina nomination as the league’s top goaltender.
Scheifele, 30, was the first player selected by the Jets after moving from Atlanta and has 272 goals and 645 points in 723 games.
A trio of important Stars forwards skated in non-contact jerseys, Brien Rea of Bally Sports reports.
Roope Hintz, Wyatt Johnston and Radek Faksa did not take contact Monday.
Hintz, coming off a career-high 75 points, didn't play this pre-season with an upper-body injury. Johnston, who impressed as a rookie last year, has also been dealing with an upper-body injury during camp while Faksa is banged up after taking a big hit in a pre-season game.
Saad Yousuf of The Athletic reports that all three players are not expected to be out long-term.
The Montreal Canadiens loaned forward Emil Heineman and defenceman Mattias Norlinder to the AHL's Laval Rocket, the final two cuts from camp.
Heineman, 21, was acquired from the Flames for Tyler Toffoli in 2022. He played in Sweden last season but also had nine points in 11 games with Laval at the end of the campaign.
Norlinder, 23, appeared in six games with the Canadiens in 2021-22. Last season in 67 games with Laval he had 19 points.
The Carolina Hurricanes — who do not have an AHL affiliate this season — have loaned top goalie prospect Pyotr Kochetkov to the Syracuse Crunch, AHL affiliate to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Kochetkov, 24, impressed with the Hurricanes last season — posting a .909 save percentage in 24 games, including 23 starts. But with both Frederik Andersen and Antti Raanta returning, Kochetkov needed a place to play.
San Jose Sharks captain Logan Couture will start the season on the team's injured list, the club announced Monday.
He has been dealing with a lower-body injury that happened over the summer while he was training and is considered week-to-week.
The veteran forward has played his entire 14-year NHL career with the Sharks and was named team captain to start the 2019-20 season. He played in all 82 games for the Sharks last season and was second on the team in both goals (27) and points (67).
He has 323 goals and 700 points in 927 career games for the Sharks.
Connor Bedard isn't the only rookie breaking camp with the Chicago Blackhawks.
Four other rookies are on the roster ahead of Tuesday's season-opener against Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
One notable name on the roster is Kevin Korchinski, the seventh overall pick in 2022 — chosen with the draft pick acquired from the Alex DeBrincat trade. A left-shot defenceman, Korchinski had 73 points in 54 games with the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds.
Other rookies to make the team: Forward Cole Guttman and defencemen Wyatt Kaiser and Alex Vlasic.
The Blackhawks made some other announcements on Monday.
Forward Philipp Kurashev will begin the season on injured reserve with a left wrist injury. Forwards Colin Blackwell (lower body), Colton Dach (right ankle), Luke Philp (right Achilles tendon) and Samuel Savoie (right femur) will begin the season on long-term injured reserve.
Additionally, the Blackhawks designated four players as assistant captains this season. Seth Jones and Connor Murphy will permanently wear As on their uniforms while newly acquired veterans Corey Perry and Nick Foligno will alternate wearing one.
Rookie Matthew Phillips has made the Capitals' opening night roster.
The long-time Flames prospect survived the final cuts made on Monday and told reporters this was something he'd been working towards his whole life.
Phillips, who stands only five-foot-seven, has cracked the 30-goal mark in each of the past two AHL campaigns with the Calgary Wranglers but never was given a full-time chance with the Flames under former coach Darryl Sutter. Now he'll get a chance to stick in the NHL in Washington.
“I don’t know about proved people wrong,” Phillips said. “There’s also a lot of people that I’d like to say that I proved right. I’m just really excited to be here and they gave me a great opportunity and put a lot of trust in me so just trying to do my best every day.”
The Capitals announced a number of moves to get salary cap compliant before Monday's roster deadline. That included placing Max Pacioretty on long-term injured reserve, Joel Edmundson on injured reserve and assigning Haman Aktell, Aliaksei Protas and Connor McMichael to AHL Hershey.
