Reigning Norris and Conn Smythe trophies winner Cale Makar has been placed into concussion protocol and will be sidelined at least for the weekend, Colorado Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said in a radio interview Tuesday morning.
Makar, who returned to action Saturday against St. Louis after missing four games with a concussion, briefly left the game after colliding with the Blues' Alexei Toropchenko. He returned and played a total of 21:27 in the game, more than five minutes below his season average.
Makar suffered the original concussion on a hit from veteran Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jeff Carter on Feb. 7.
"We'll keep an eye on him," Bednar said in an interview with 92.5 FM in Denver. "We'll just monitor him and hope for a speedy return, but it won't be this weekend."
The Calgary native has 13 goals and 32 assists for 45 points in 46 games this season.
In the same interview, Bednar said there remains no timetable for captain Gabriel Landeskog to return from the knee injury that has kept him out of the line for the entire season. Landeskog recently began skating on his own, but Bednar said there is still a long road to go before he plays in a game.
"He has a routine, he'll go through this process, the mechanics of his stride, and he'll work it into a spot where he's testing it more and straining it more and see where it goes," Bednar said. "At this point it's much too early to be able to set a date."
