The Colorado Avalanche have signed defenceman Justin Barron to an entry-level contract.
Barron, 19, was captain of his hometown Halifax Mooseheads this season, scoring 31 points in 33 QMJHL games. The Mooseheads season ended on April 18 when the team failed to qualify for the playoffs.
Barron was a first-round pick, 25th overall, by the Avalanche in 2020 and joins a promising young blue line that includes Sam Girard, Cale Makar and Bowen Byram. He won a silver medal with Canada at this past winter’s world juniors tournament, recording two assists and a plus-five rating in seven games.
Mike Chambers of The Denver Post reports Barron will now be assigned to the AHL’s Colorado Eagles.
