The NHL has fined Colorado Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon $5,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct after he threw a helmet at Arizona Coyotes forward Conor Garland on Wednesday.
The fine is the maximum allowable under the collective bargaining agreement.
The incident occurred midway through the third period of Wednesday’s 9-3 Avalanche win. While battling for the puck to the right of the Coyotes net, MacKinnon and Garland got into a wrestling match for which both players were given roughing minor penalties. However, after the two were separated MacKinnon picked up Garland’s helmet and threw it at his head to earn an extra 10-minute misconduct.
The fine comes one day after Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid was fined $5,000 for a hit he threw on the Canadiens’ Jesperi Kotkaniemi.
