Avalanche's MacKinnon out approximately four weeks with upper-body injury

Colorado Avalanche star centre Nathan MacKinnon will miss approximately four weeks with an upper-body injury sustained Monday against the Philadelphia Flyers, the team announced Tuesday.

MacKinnon exited Monday's game during the first period after an apparent injury on a check by Scott Laughton.

He leads the Avalanche and is tied for sixth in the NHL with 34 points (eight goals, 26 assists) in 23 games this season.

The Avalanche have been hit with significant injuries to their forward and defence group — notably, they are without captain Gabriel Landeskog, Arturri Lehkonen, Valeri Nichushkin, Evan Rodrigues, Bowen Byram and Josh Manson. With MacKinnon out, the reigning Stanley Cup Champions are missing most of their top-six forward group.
