The Chicago Blackhawks have hired Chicago Cubs executive Jeff Greenberg as associate general manager, the team announced Thursday.
The Blackhawks previously interviewed Greenberg for the role of general manager as part of their messaging that they were open to options outside of hockey. The team eventually settled on naming Kyle Davidson, then the interim general manager in the wake of Stan Bowman's firing, to the role on March 1.
Greenberg's hiring rounds out the Blackhawks' executive team, as Norm MacIver was also hired as an associate general manager on March 9. Greenberg will be "overseeing the strategic systems and processes that will fuel the entire Hockey Operations group" beginning officially on May 9, the team announced in a press release.
“Jeff will be both an architect and connector of the hockey operations group, ensuring that we’re always at the forefront of professional sports,” said Davidson in a press release. “He reached out to congratulate me after I was named General Manager, and we connected instantly over our parallel paths, shared love for hockey and vision for this sport’s future. I’m excited for our fans to see what he, alongside Norm, can bring as key voices at the table — a table that will continue to grow with other leaders we will add to the team.”
“What I’ve learned about the Blackhawks is they’re serious about using this rebuilding period to not only set this franchise up to be the best in hockey, but the best in all of sports moving forward,” said Greenberg. “There couldn’t be a more exciting time to get in on the ground floor of this journey and pursue every possible solution to put this team back on the path to winning hockey.”
Greenberg started with the Cubs as a baseball operations intern in 2012 and, after holding roles as director of pro scouting and baseball operations, director of baseball operations, and assistant to the general manager, he assumed the role of assistant general manager in 2020.
Prior to his Cubs tenure, Greenberg, a graduate of Columbia Law School, interned for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Arizona Diamondbacks and Major League Baseball's Labour Relations Department.
The Blackhawks are currently 27th in the NHL standings as the season winds down and have undergone sweeping organizational changes in the wake of the bombshell Jenner & Block report which revealed its mishandling of sexual assault allegations.
