When it came to the Columbus Blue Jackets’ offence on Saturday night, it was their defence that was putting in the real work.
In a 6-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers at Nationwide Arena, the Blue Jackets got their six goals from four different defencemen.
Zach Werenski and Damon Severson each recorded two goals, while Nick Blankenburg and Erik Gudbranson contributed one each.
This marked a franchise record for Columbus and just the second time in league history that a team has had six goals from defencemen in a single game.
The only other time this has happened was by the Washington Capitals on Dec. 4, 1992 in a game against the New York Rangers. In that game, an 8-4 win, the Capitals got two goals each from Sylvain Côté and Kevin Hatcher, and one each from Paul Cavallini and Al Iafrate.
Meanwhile, Blankenburg's goal also marked the first of his career. The 25-year-old was playing in just his seventh NHL game after getting called up by the Blue Jackets on Friday.
