Defenceman Brendan Smith has signed a two-year, $2.2-million deal with the New Jersey Devils, the team announced Wednesday.
Smith had four goals and four assists last season in 45 games with the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Toronto native has 33 goals, 85 assists and 630 penalty minutes in 571 career games with the Hurricanes, New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings.
The Red Wings picked Smith, 33, in the first round (27th overall) of the 2007 NHL Draft.
