Rod Brind'Amour has never been afraid of the truth, so he didn't mince words during an in-game interview Wednesday night while his Carolina Hurricanes trailed the Edmonton Oilers 5-0.
"We're on our way to lose 50-0 right now," Brind'Amour told TNT's Darren Pang in the second period. "I've never seen our team play this brutal. I'm lost for words, to be quiet honest with you."
The Oilers — who are coming off a five-day break between games — pounced on the Hurricanes early with two goals in the first minute of the game and had built a 4-0 lead before the first intermission. Former Hurricanes forward Warren Foegele extended that lead to 5-0 with a goal early in the second.
Despite the lopsided score, the Hurricanes ultimately outshot the Oilers 40-34 in what ended up as a 6-1 Edmonton win.
After the game, Brind'Amour and Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal both had harsh words for their team.
"It was a bad game from start to finish. We didn't have anything going," Brind'Amour said. "Not acceptable, that's for sure. Our top guys, especially, have got to show up a little more. You see their top guys out there, that's for sure. We've got to be better."
Added Staal, who scored Carolina's only goal: "It wasn't pretty, the whole game. Embarrassing, really."
The Oilers and Hurricanes were a popular pre-season pick for a Stanley Cup Final match — a rematch of the 2006 series that ended with the Hurricanes, captained by Brind'Amour, raising the Stanley Cup. But both teams have not performed up to expectations so far this season.
The Hurricanes entered play second in the Metro Division at 14-9-1 while allowing 3.21 goals per game, tied for 15th in the league.
The Oilers are now on a five-game winning streak after a slow start to the season that led to a coaching change. Edmonton's last loss came on Nov. 22, a 6-3 setback against Brind'Amour's Hurricanes.
