Bruins rookie Matthew Poitras has season-ending shoulder surgery

Boston Bruins rookie forward Matthew Poitras had surgery on his right shoulder Wednesday, the team announced.

Poitras's recovery timeline is five months, effectively ending his season.

Poitras, 19, made the Bruins' roster out of camp and appeared in 33 games this season, scoring five goals and 15 points while averaging just over 13 minutes per game. The Bruins briefly released him from the team in December so he could represent Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championship.

"Matt has been an important part of our team’s success thus far, and he will be missed," general manager Don Sweeney said in a statement. "Our medical staff made the recommendation for Matt to proceed with the surgery rather than continue playing with an unstable shoulder and risking further damage. Everyone involved supported the decision as to do what was best for him at this time. Matt is just starting his Bruins career and is a key part of our future."
