Patrice Bergeron is coming back for one more season.
The Boston Bruins announced their captain's return Monday morning, 30 minutes after releasing a cryptic tweet alluding to his future.
Bergeron signed a one-year deal worth $2.5 million, plus an additional $2.5 million in performance-based incentives.
The club tweeted a silent video at 9 a.m. Monday morning of the 18-year NHL veteran winking at the camera, without providing any context for it. Bruins twitter quickly weighed in on it, inferring that their captain is indeed coming back to play for another season.
Bergeron's status had been up in the air since the end of the regular season, with the 37-year-old openly contemplating retirement as his team appeared to be undergoing an overhaul, with head coach Bruce Cassidy being fired and several key players (Brad Marchand, Charlie McAvoy, Matt Grzelcyk) likely gone for significant time due to injuries.
Getting the reigning Selke Trophy winner (as the league's best defensive forward) and team leader back would not be something to tease your fanbase about if it wasn't going to happen.
Bergeron has helped the Bruins reach the Stanley Cup Final three times, winning the title in 2011.
