First-round draft pick Samuel Honzek was signed by the Calgary Flames to a three-year entry-level contract, the team announced Wednesday.
"We were happy to have selected Samuel in this year's draft and as equally pleased today to have him signed to his entry level agreement," said Flames General Manager Craig Conroy in a team-released statement. "We entered the draft looking to add skill with size to our group and Samuel is a textbook example. He had an impressive showing at development camp, and we are excited to watch him build on that at main camp in September."
Honzek, who was chosen 16th overall in 2023, carries a $950,000 AAV.
The six-foot-four, 195-pound winger from Trencin, Slovakia, had 23 goals and 56 points in 43 games with the Western Hockey League's Vancouver Giants last season.
A finalist for the WHL's rookie of the year award, Honzek represented Slovakia at the 2023 world junior hockey championship, suiting up twice before missing the rest of the tournament after his leg was cut by a skate blade in a game against the United States.
The Flames missed the playoffs last season after finishing tops in the Pacific Division in 2021-22.
